27 Ottobre, 2026 Published in Travel

Setting off on a journey is always exciting. This time, I want to tell you about an experience that engaged not only all five senses, but also the heart; it was wonderful whilst it lasted, and even after returning home, it lingers as a sense of mental and spiritual well-being. Once we landed in Malé, we were escorted to the lounge reserved for guests of Sun Siyam Resorts, where we could enjoy some refreshments and opt for a rejuvenating neck and shoulder massage. From there, we awaited the departure of the seaplane, which flew over the coral islands dotting the Blue Ocean to take us to our destination. An Islamic legend tells that when God created the world, realising its beauty, He wept, and His tears, falling to earth, became these paradisiacal islands, known as ‘fushi’ in Maldivian. The islands belong to the government and are leased to those who build resorts there; the curious thing is that the rent for an island is calculated based on the number of coconut palms growing on it. These trees are, in fact, very valuable because every part of them is used for a different purpose. An interesting fact: the first person to bring tourism to the Maldives was an Italian travel agent, Giorgio Corbin, in 1972. The first paying guests were accommodated in makeshift lodgings, and then, at the end of that same year, the first resort in Maldivian history was built: Kurumb. Ready to come with me?
