“As long as we have passions, we will never stop discovering the world. Love is a desire for knowledge.” The Craft of Living by Cesare Pavese

Passion is that feeling that makes us feel alive, that gives us the fire that drives us to do unexpected things and live every moment intensely. Passion drives us to discover new places, to have experiences, and thus to create new memories. Sometimes it surfaces when we slow down, when we escape the frenzy of our daily lives and allow ourselves to listen to the rhythm of our heart.

After taking a path that leads up a gentle hill surrounded by vineyards and passing through an ancient wooden door, we find ourselves in an enchanted garden where the scent of lavender and rosemary greets us. Here, a noble rural villa, first mentioned in 1709, has been transformed into a luxury Country Relais by its new owners, who with love and passion have created an epicurean place where everyone finds their own personal dimension. The peace and beauty of nature allow us to enter a different dimension: for some, pure relaxation, for others a starting point for interesting tours to discover the region and its food and wine, for others the pleasure of indulging in intimate moments, and for still others a fusion of all these things.

The garden boasts delicate varieties of roses, fragrant lavender bushes, and a precious vegetable garden where lush vegetables are carefully tended. The rooms and halls of the family’s summer residence, the stone halls, the storerooms, the barn, and the 18th-century cellars have been expertly renovated to offer guests comfortable suites and private corners for every moment of the day. Every detail, from the 19th-century wooden furniture, custom-made for the noble owners of the time, to the iconic pieces of 20th-century design, from the lights to the flowers, from the sheets to the books, has been chosen to offer the opportunity to indulge in moments dedicated to self-care and nourishment of the senses. The books are an invitation to rediscover the pleasure of reading, with inspirations ranging from the verses of Pavese and Ovid, to the erotic vignettes of Milo Manara, and even the poetic quotations of Cesare Pavese, which even appear on the walls. They almost seem to exude the emotions of the writer, who was born right here in Santo Stefano Balbo.

Walking through the garden, you reach the pool, nestled between stones and grass, offering a glimpse of peace and beauty over the surrounding vineyards. Time slows, the senses are heightened, and as dusk falls, you can enjoy a pleasant aperitif expertly prepared by the owner with ingredients from the garden and local producers, accompanied by bread she kneads herself. A journey into authentic flavors, enhanced by a glass of sparkling wine from Azienda Agricola Marcalberto, a historic winery carved into the tuff rock dating back to the first half of the 19th century. It’s now evening, and we can venture into the village to enjoy traditional dishes, then return to the tranquility of our room, close the door behind us, and let ourselves be lulled by cuddles, a final glimpse of nature from the private terrace, and then let ourselves drift off to a restful sleep wrapped in soft sheets.

A gentle awakening brings us a morning smile, a quick visit to the terrace, and then we enjoy a delicious breakfast prepared with natural ingredients and homemade jams, my favorite being the rose one. I, who usually eat very little, was tempted to try everything; the taste fulfilled what the eyes had perceived. A final cup of coffee and then we return to daily life, enriched by a unique and fulfilling experience. As Cesare Pavese wrote: “We don’t remember days, we remember moments.”
