Si dice che il nome derivi dal latino “Portus Delphini” che significa “porto dei delfini”, in passato infatti questi animali erano spesso avvistati nelle acque circostanti. E’ stata la residenza estiva di molte celebrità tra cui Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor e Richard Burton e set di film come “Il diavolo veste Prada” e “Al di là delle nuvole” di Michelangelo Antonioni.
