Tourism plays a fundamental role in our country. In anticipation of the upcoming Olympics, the “INTERNATIONAL TOURISM FORUM,” organized by the Ministry in collaboration with ENIT S.p.A., was held at the Palazzo del Ghiaccio in Milan. Minister of Tourism Daniela Santanchè acknowledged the growth of this sector, which, fortunately, is also involving small municipalities. This is crucial for the deseasonalization and diversification of tourism offerings. The future of tourism in Italy, therefore, does not depend on an increase in absolute numbers, but on the ability to manage the intensity, timing, and space of the tourism phenomenon, promoting less frequented areas.

During the Forum, a memorandum of understanding for the sustainable development and safety of tourist municipalities was signed. Also in attendance were Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and the mayors of the municipalities adhering to the Amalfi Charter (tourist destinations most affected by tourism pressure). The meeting aimed to foster a balance between tourism impact and residents’ quality of life, promote the repopulation of areas affected by the exodus, ensure the safety and governance of the territories, enhance the national tourism identity, and develop sustainable tourism for future generations.
“This is a further step in the vision of increasingly safe tourism, capable of protecting travelers, businesses, and resident communities,” stated Minister Santanchè.

An important finding that emerged was related to food and wine as a travel motivation. Over 14.5 million tourists traveled to Italy in 2024, primarily motivated by food and wine experiences. The value of this type of tourism rose to €9 billion, with food representing the largest holiday expenditure in Italy. Among the regions of excellence, Tuscany remains one of the most popular for food and wine tourism among Italians, while Naples’ restaurants are particularly attractive to foreign tourists. Other popular regions include Campania and Sicily, which saw a 20% increase in visitors.

Tourism is no longer just a showcase for promoting Italy, but is also an economic driver capable of generating innovation, employment, and regional development. This is the summary of the vision expressed by Maria Modaffari, National President of CNE Federimprese Europa, who followed the proceedings of the International Tourism Forum together with Marco Sicbaldi, Head of the Sustainability and Energy Transition Department. Industry operators, institutions, and stakeholders were present. As Milan-Cortina 2026 will demonstrate, major events must become an opportunity to redistribute flows and wealth towards villages and inland areas.
