Quig Bruning, Head of Jewelry at Sotheby’s, Americas & EMEA, said that “Mediterranean Blue” is one of nature’s rarest gems. The rough diamond was discovered at the Cullinan mine in South Africa in 2023 and originally weighed 31.94 carats. After a meticulous planning and cutting process that lasted six months, it became the diamond we see now. Less than 0.1% of diamonds purchased show blue color marks, and an infinitely small percentage of these are graded Fancy Vivid Blue. This mine has produced many of the world’s most famous diamonds, including the 530-carat Great Star of Africa, the world’s largest colorless faceted diamond; The Blue Moon of Josephine, a 12.03-carat cushion-shaped Fancy Vivid Blue diamond that sold for $48.5 million at Sotheby’s Geneva in 2015 and The De Beers Blue, a 15.10-carat step-cut Fancy Vivid Blue diamond, sold for HK$451 million / $57.5 million in 2022 at Sotheby’s Hong Kong.
