Jewellery is once again becoming a symbol of style, identity and personal expression for men too. Throughout history, it has been a symbol of power and wealth, and of belonging to a particular group or profession; it then evolved into purely feminine adornment. Today, it is once again enhancing men’s outfits, often taking centre stage. Cartier, Buccellati and Damiani have guided us in rediscovering the heritage and anecdotes that have shaped the history of these important houses, and how they view the present – and perhaps the future – of an object that is precious not only in itself, but also, and above all, for what it represents to the wearer.
Michel Aliaga, Director of Transmission of History & Heritage at Cartier, retraced the Maison’s journey, the jewellery that has become its emblem, and its evolution, which today focuses on the power of design, personality and freedom of interpretation. Stars of yesteryear such as Clark Gable, Steve McQueen and Gary Cooper chose Cartier, as do today’s stars such as Jake Gyllenhaal and Rami Malek.

Luca Buccellati, Special Sales and VIP Director at Maison Buccellati, highlighted the concept of luxury and the difference made by focusing on craftsmanship and Italian manufacturing traditions. Great figures from history, such as Gabriele D’Annunzio, chose Buccellati, recognising it as the ‘prince of goldsmiths’. Today, we see actors such as Matthew Rhys choosing the brand for red-carpet events. Fine jewellery has the power to transform techniques, materials and the culture of craftsmanship into elements of identity.
