Santa Margherita Ligure was created by Napoleon in 1812 by uniting two adjacent villages, calling it “Port Napoleon.” Victor Emmanuel later renamed it “Santa Margherita.” This charming seaside town is an elegant resort nestled in a stunning bay. Commonly called “Santa” by its inhabitants, its origins are ancient, having already been known to the Romans. The first wealthy vacationers arrived here between the second half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, but it was in the 1960s that families and young people, especially from Milan, arrived, transforming it into a lively meeting place. Remnants of its noble past include the splendid Art Nouveau buildings in the center and a villa with a vast garden of rare plants, Villa Durazzo.
