Tartufi mon amour

(Alexandre Dumas)

The truffle has always been enveloped by a halo of mystery and magic, it makes the truffle even more precious, fascinating and desirable. It has been known since ancient times, Plinio had called it the “miracle of nature” and the “jewel of the earth”, while Giovenale wrote that the truffle birth was caused by a Jupiter’s lightning, flung near an oak tree. Jupiter was a very passionate god, so aphrodisiac powers were given to the truffle. It lives under the ground creating a unique symbiosis with the plants which surround it, there is a mutual exchange that shows the nature’s perfect balance. When they mature they give off an intense and inebriating scent that attracts wild animals, they eating them contribute to the shedding of their spores and guarantee their life. The research of the truffle constituted in 1700 a fun palace game at the European courts, perhaps for this reason exclusive and experiential “hunts” are organized today to research it. The favorite companion in this precious search is the dog, it is able, thanks to its sniff, to identify where the “fruit of gods” is hidden. In this period go out in the hottest hours is preferred because the warmth of the sun warms the soil and allows the scent of truffles to emerge more easily. We have to have a lot of patience, but this will be largely repaid. “The greedy of all eras have never pronounced the name of the truffle without carrying the hand to the hat”. (Alexandre Dumas).
