Bentley The New Era

Bentley has crossed new boundaries by projecting the refinement of its design into the digital world. The timeless details which have made Bentley an iconic in the world, thanks to the craftsmanship, and the charm of its classicism meet the most advanced digital technology, creating a perfect combination without change the BRAND’s DNA. How not to love some details, as the elegant brass lap counter placed on the dashboard of the 1929 Bentley ‘Blower’ which was created by adapting a counter of billiard table score counter; or the analog dials deep set of the Continental R-Type, embedded in a walnut dash. The Human Machine Interface (HMI) team worked on these details to give a Benltey’s touch to digital screens. Examples: they include a 3D knurling on the dials inners, the same design philosophy of wood and the subtle shadowing beneath the elegant needles, all digitally generated to recreate the same precious flavor, emblem of all Bentley’s cars. The new era has brought on these precious cars the ability to connect with smartphones, view 3D digital mapping, upload music, see movies (for passengers), control the cabin ambience, select 30 different languages (including right-to-left and vertical reading), at the touch of a finger. There are also three different sound systems (Bentley, Bang & Olufsen and Naim). A skeuomorphic approach has been chosen, it will age with the car because “A Bentley isn’t a smartphone; it’s going to be used and cherished for generations” and the instrumentation, we know, ages much faster than the design of the car. On board we can have a moment of pure magic with the “dim screen” mode. It excludes assisted navigation and infotainment; the speedometer and rev counter dials are in darkness – except for a soft pool of light around the point of each needle; only bare minimum of information is displayed and you enjoy the journey and the road. It’s the perfect option for long night drives on familiar roads, evoking the spirit of Woolf Barnato’s legendary night drive through France to beat the Blue Train, or the marque’s many victories at Le Mans. There are some differences in the Continental GT and in the Flying Spur instruments. On the first, performance-focused dials feature a 3D-effect to the background knurling, reflecting the design of that model’s distinctive gear lever. On the second one, a bronze chapter ring around both the speedometer and the rev counter was introduced o give a feeling of consistency with the car, refinedly elegant.
