Wines often have fascinating stories to tell—stories of places and the people who shape them. In Valtellina, on steep dry-stone terraces carved into the mountainsides, exceptional mountain wines are born. The Consorzio di Tutela Vini di Valtellina, together with La Strada del Vino, came to Milan to introduce us to this remarkable territory, its vineyards, and ViVa, an event dedicated to celebrating its rich winemaking heritage. From 12 to 14 September 2026, the town of Sondrio will host the second edition of the festival, featuring talks, tastings, and authentic experiences designed to showcase, through a contemporary lens, the extraordinary wine, cultural, and territorial heritage of this unique and irreplaceable landscape.

Viticulture in this region is far more than agricultural production—it is a cultural legacy that reflects a perfect balance between nature, tradition, and human ingenuity. It is a collective work of art, recognised as one of Italy’s Historic Rural Landscapes and acknowledged by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Rock, sand, gravel, and pebbles define the soils on which these extraordinary vineyards thrive. The wines that embody this identity, and which we had the pleasure of tasting, include Valtellina Superiore DOCG, representing the five historic production areas (Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, and Valgella); Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG, made from dried Nebbiolo grapes, a process that enhances its structure and complexity; Rosso di Valtellina DOC, a younger and more versatile expression of the territory; and Alpi Retiche IGT, showcasing the experimental spirit and creativity of local producers.

For the occasion, ONEST Restaurant created a bespoke menu to accompany the tasting. Fresh, high-quality ingredients provided the perfect foundation for dishes that were refined, creative, and full of character, offering an ideal pairing with the wines.
